If you lock your house up and leave it empty and instruct an estate agent to sell it. Do you still have to pay monthly C/tax if you do not live in it ??

If the property you have vacated is unfurnished you may be entitled to claim an exemption for up to six months (An exemption means that there is no charge for this period), after six months has lapsed you will be liable for 50% of the charge on that property. If the property remains furnished you will be entitled to a 50% discount from the date you vacated until such time as the property is sold or becomes occupied. Use the on-line form to apply.
Some more info here... (just posed it for someone else as well :))

my mum recently phoned the council regarding my nans house as she has recently died and was told it is exempt for 6 months if empty and after that you only get 10% off the council tax even though it is empty.
