Hi All Is it true that holders of Irish passports have some sort of special dispensation if they want to work in the US? My boyfreind is Irish (well has Irish parents) and would like to work over there for a time, even if it was just for a summer period. Maybe it's a rumour but I have heard it more than once. Any answers would be appreciated Thanks

Not exactly true, but there is truth behind it.

The USA run a 'greencard lottery' each year in which 50000 lucky non-citizens 'win' a visa to enable them to stay in the USA - permanently if they want. I assume thay have to meet certain criteria, but other than that it's chance.

Irish citizens (and those of many other countries) are eligible for the lottery - UK citizens are not.

I've heard of this Lottery before so we'll have a look. Cheers for the answer
I know several irish people obviously with irish passports had no trouble getting visa to work there because of irish passport didnt think they had lottery to get theirs but could be wrong they talk as though they have a right to work there
