my car overheated , rover 600 when towing a caravan, had to be towed home, now the car starts but makes a knocking sound from under the hood and the oil light stays on any ideas what is wrong?

sounds like the big ends have probably gone.
yep, big ends, you can try using a thicker oil but you will need to get the big ends done, because the big ends have gone, chances are the oil isnt being pumped around the top of the engine so your cams could go if you dont get it sorted.
as its a old car,it would be more cost effective to get your self another car.
Because the car overheated you boiled the oil, try new thicker oil and then if it still does make a knocking noise try STP....
