Book I read about 25 years ago, can't remember author or title

I'm looking for a book. can't remember title or author. Its about a brother and sister (i think the boy is called george). To cut a long story short they see a ghost in their garden and they end up going back in time to save him from a fire which happened years ago in the house they now live in. It turns out it's their great grandfather. I read this in the early 1980's and it was made into a film but i can't for the life of me remember name or author and i wish to read it again.

Hi there, could it be 'The Amazing Mr. Blunden' (originally published as 'The Ghosts')? It was made into a film in 1972.

Yes that's it. Thank you so much. I will certainly hunt this out buy this so that i've got a copy i can keep for when my daughters are old enough to read it. There are some books that everyone should read and this is one of them. Thanks again, its very much appreciated.

a great book-I read it in my teens ad would read it again after all these years. Lost my copy way back. The film starred the late Lynne Frederick.
