Somebody once told me how to put a 'stop' icon on the desktop so that when it was clicked, the machine would close down without the rigmarole of going to 'Start', 'Shut down', 'Yes, I'm sure I want to shut down, honest.'  I've recently changed computers and can't remember how I did it before.  Do any of you clever people know?

I've no idea, I would like to find out though.  I've been in the habit of pressing the Windows Key pressing U then enter.  Once you get used to doing it, you'll closing down in half a second.
launch the Create Shortcut wizard by right clicking on the desktop and selecting the New/Shortcut command from the shortcut menu. Once the Create Shortcut wizard loads, type
c:\windows\rundll.exe user.exe,exitwindows
in the Command Line text box, (Make sure that there isn't a space between the comma and the exitwindows
parameter otherwise the command won't work.) To continue, click Next. In the next dialog box, give the shortcut a name like 'Shut Down Windows'
FERN57 I have xp and that is not a valid command. What is the space between exe and user for? ive tried the space, a \ and a, and none work.

Sorry, I didn't know you had xp.  That one is for Windows 9x.

Try this one:

To create your Windows XP shut down icon, follow these steps exactly:

RIGHT click on your Desktop
Click on New
Click on Shortcut
Type:   shutdown -s -t 01
Click the Next button
Type a name for your shortcut
Click the Finish button

how about for windows 2000

There's always one, isn't there?  (o:
ok, try this little program - it works for all.

I've got XP and the 'shutdown - s - t 01' didnt work? Just a black box (batchfile?) popped up and vanished nothing else happened - also the box wasnt there quick enough for me to read any of it.

I Also tried the 'Windows key - U -Enter', as suggested by Gandy. That also didnt work, i got a window pop up with utility manager and the narator started talking?

Have I got a computer that has a mind of it's own??

I think ALL computers have a mind of their own.   Maybe that little program in my last post will work.
Yes it did Fern, Many thanks.

Thanks, Ferns - I've now got the 'shutdown' button where I want it!  By the way, I've tried to give you a 3-star rating for you answer, but for some reason the site won't let me.  You'll just have to accept my thanks instead!
