Why is the Lion King of the Jungle?

Lions tend to inhabit grassy plains, savannahs, open woodlands and scrub country and avoid densely wooded areas so where did they pick up the status of "King of the Jungle"

its our old friends the victorians again.  they were so impressed with the lion in general that they referred to it as "king of the jungle" because of its size.  this despite the fact that most lions live on plains, its the females that hunt and they are regularly beaten up by hyeanas
