ps - macassar is a still known in the context of the "anti-macassar", which is the sort of lace-type thingy which older people would have on the backs of chairs, settees and that sort of thing. They were originally used to prevent the oily macassar from staining the furniture.

my gran used to still call chair backs antimacassars but I believe they were always dark colours eg dark green with fancy tassles . ugh.
