I know they are really meant to be used in laptops but is there a reason mine fails to work on a desktop with the message 'fail to create Rasentry' ?

no I think he means an internet broadband dongle..

Make sure you are logged in as an administrator account when trying to set the connection up, once setup you can use it from a normal user account.

Right its an internet broadband dongle and plugs into the USB port. I am also logged in as an administrator

goto the website for whoever you got the dongle from and download the latest software/drivers and install them
