Sony Vaio: the battery lasts about 40 mins when laptop is unplugged from the mains. On other laptops, the battery lasts about 2 hours. How can I get the battery power back up again?

You don't say how old the battery is, or how much hammering it has had. It may simply be worn out ands coming to the end of its useful life. Check out the clost of a replacement, and get full power back, instead of waiting for the poor thing to expire completely,

Thanks for your reply. It's only about 1-1.5 years old. It shouldn't be dying already.... :-(
I dunno if it applies to laptop batteries but a while back I seen something on TV to say that rechargeable batteries last longer if they're only charged once they're completely dead rather than being charged after only a little bit of use.

The analogy given back then was of half emptying a bottle of milk, the remaining half going off a little and then topping the bottle back up with fresh milk again to give something that's not quite "as good as new".
