Right, so i've been back at work for two weeks (since maternity). I'm a "PA" to MD of a small management and marketing consultancy...
I'm only back part-time, so mon-wed.
Anyway, part of my job is to research the market via the Financial Times newspaper. So EVERYDAY i have been reading and cutting articles of interest and filing them accordingly...knowing that my boss has not ONCE looked through the tonnes of files ive created....
So he's just asked me throw all the previous clippings from the newspapers and research and start from scratch (with an updated research list...)!!! Its not enough that we are subscribed to the FT via t'internet and the fact that i could print off the articles, but he purposely wants me to hand cut them out of the newspaper!!
Not only could he save a fortune by cancelling our mail order it would just be ten times easier!!!!!
Why are men so difficult..? Is it because if i didnt read the papers and cut the articles out i'd practical be sat here with nothing to do.... ?
I just dont see any logic.... do you?
Feel that maybe its time to look for another job....

Youre right - its not cost effective and its waste of manpower, why dont some folk see that?
I once took a job as a secretary to a bank manager and had nothing to do, by day 3 I went to him and asked why he took me on, he said "all the other managers had a secretary so I wanted one" - DOH

I do it because at the end of the day he's paying me to do it... so i will.
But its just extremely unneccessary and i just feel as though he doesnt use me to my full potential....!

Why dont you start creating an online record of the articles by downloading and pasting them into word documents and emailing them to him everday with a bit of your own alalysis of why you think these articles are interesting or useful.
He may then be so impressed, that you get to dump the paper cutting out and also make you job a bit more interesting.
I work in a regulatory area and we have people who do a similar thing from a finacial regulation basis and analyse the impact or potential impact on the company or industry - they get paid pretty well for this, so you may end up with a pay rise for your (or my!) initiative.

Becaue thats the thing, he has no interest in reading them. If he did actual browse the articles now and then i would consider it but he doesnt.
Today my colleague suggested to him that i just print off articles form their web page but he said he wanted them cut from the paper.
I could sort them into an online database which would be ten times more convienient,cost less and take up no space at all!

If you send him an email with the attachment, but with your analysis typed on the email, he may read them, or he may use them to show to his boss when he needs to justify the budget next year!
It must be really frustrating, but at the ned of the day, if he never looks at them, how will he know if you do the online thing instead?

he is the only boss, no one above him unfortunately!
I completely understand your logic annie and may try it if i find an article of particular interest to the business - but i hit a brick wall again because i have NO interest at all in Economics/Energy or anything along those lines!! I sit on in meetings and it just goes straight over my head!!
