Usually because you eat a lot less carbohydrates. Carbohydrates have a direct effect on your brain's serotonin levels (serotonin is known as the 'happiness hormone' because of the positive effect it has on your brain). That's why feeling miserable tends to make you want to eat cheesecake and chocolate, rather than lightly steamed vegetables.
