I want to buy and sell on ebay - do I need a premier paypal account to accept payments via paypal (as opposed to make payments)?

Yes you do. Also when you list something on ebay, you are charged selling fees too.
Unless you make it very clear in your listings that PayPal payments must be funded from funds in the account, not credit or debit card. Not worth the hassle - better to have the premier account.

Its probably better to have a Premier account if you plan to sell a lot of things.

You can receive some PayPal payments without one, but sooner or later someone will try to pay using a credit card, and youll need to upgrade to a Premier Account in order to accept the payment. Once youve done that youll be charged a higher fee on every PayPal transaction, regardless of how its funded by the buyer!

The vast majority of buyers use PayPal these days, so you dont have much choice really if youre selling on Ebay. PayPal is good in some ways ... very quick payments, which makes it easier for sellers, and buyers like using it because it offers some protection.

If youre selling high value items (same applies to any item though) you need to be especially careful. You must send the item to the address PayPal give you by trackable means ... this means its trackable online i.e. recorded delivery / Special Delivery or International Signed For if youre sending it abroad; also the buyer has to be verified with a confirmed address. Confirmed addresses are only those of residents of the UK, USA and Canada at the moment, I believe.

If you go to the Ebay discussion boards youll find a lot of advice about this and similar matters.

Paypal is fine when its working, but they decided to place 7 payments of mine 2 weeks ago for security reasons. TRying to get it resolved has been a nightmare and they still haven't given me explanation. Just be warned lol

Count yourself lucky jane

I have emailed the sellers to advise them of what has happened and their response has been that quite a lot of people are having problems
Revfunk is right about sorting out problems with paypal. Only happened to me once. I tried using my account from another computer and they aborted a transaction that I had already done. Nightmare to sort out and took about a week. Only happened once thank goodness.
Carp

I had seven to the value of 330 quid

They all went thro 2 weeks ago then an hour after I had received email conf for each payment they decided to stop them "for security"

I had to email all of the ebay sellers to apologise and some of them had already posted the goods and had the payment suspended.

2 weeks later and still not sorted.

Rev, My experience was similar, but on a much smaller scale. Still embarassing. I spent ages on the phone to them - and getting through to them was hellish as well. I remember I had to fax something to them and even then it was the following morning before my account was available ok. Probably about 8-9 days to resolve!
Mine has been 2 weeks tomorrow and still not sorted. Their attitude was "we can do what we want to your account"

The staff are rude/illiterate and just generally a nightmare lol
There are thousands of websites for people who hate paypal. Here is the biggest one which is all about complaints about them.

Jane I was not posting "many" negative comments. I gave info about the only problem I ever had and that it was a nightmare to resolve through no fault of my own. You are lucky that this has never happened to you!
Yeah Jane

Lol

Before my mishap I had used paypal for over a year with no problems then one day they decide to put on hold payments I had made a week before that still havent been sorted.

I was simply pointing out that paypal is fine and dandy when it works but if they decide to mess you about then heaven help you.
