What is the offence?

Scenario. 2 lanes at traffic lights, one is marked for straight ahead, the other is for left turn. There is no filter light , just one set of traffic lights. If a motorist uses the right hand lane but goes straight on, what offence could he be charged with

If he is in the right hand lane and goes straight on I don't see that any offence has been commited

Even if there is an arrow for a right turn only in the right hand lane?

However, if he were in the left hand lane and went straight on, he would have committed the offence of 'Failing to conform to a traffic sign' under the Road Traffic Act 1988

Contravening a traffic sign I would say. Probably vebal warning if caught by the old bill.

Sorry.. having a bad day.. What I meant to say was outside lane had an arrow for RIGHT turn (not left as my original posting)

To have commited an offence the right turn would have had to have a mandatory sign saying right turn only.

I think the police have an offence in their armoury of something like 'misuse of a lane to gain advantage over other road users'

Whether they would use it in a case like this I don't know.

I think it is used mostly to deal with the cheats who pull off the busy motorway onto a sliproad to rejoin further up the queue.
