Hi there, i'm just about to begin my specialised subject in my art class to explore and develop and I have chosen music. Now, what i'm hoping for is some artists that painted under the influence of certain music genres. E.g. I know I can use Andy Warhol for pop music, but what about blues, rock, jazz, classical (among my tastes). Any suggestions or pointers to artists would be soooo very helpful. Art is love my friends, art is love.

I take it that you're using the phrase "under the influence" in a general sense, rather than its drink/drugs sense! In that case, there are certainly links between the American Abstract Expressionists - especially Jackson Pollock - and Jazz music. I don't know about Picasso's taste in music, but he designed scenery for ballets by Stravinsky, and they are each key players in the 20th century Modernism. Raoul Dufy painted many canvases with musical motifs, including names of classical composers, such as Mozart. Matisse played the violin, andf included the instrument in several of his paintings. Kandinsky famously based his theories of abstract art on the concept of music. Is that enough to be going on with? Good Luck.

thanks for all your help, i'm on my way to looking up all of those names. If you've any perfect examples of their work that you think really sums up the music genre they're wanting to capture (bearing in mind that all i'm interested in covering is Blues, Jazz, Rock, Pop and Classical) then add that in there too. Pollock's "Summer Time", which was quite possibly inspired by the Gershwin composition; Dufy's "Tribute to Mozar"t; Matisse's "Interior with Violin"; and Piet Mondrian's "Jazz (I forgot about him first time round). Repros of all these should be easy to find, probably on the internet, via Google.
