thanks slipnot - usually the clues like 1a are relatively easy to find but I'd looked everywhere and got nowhere - thanks again!

Yes, I've struggled today with the last three and couldn't find anything (thought entreat, but couldn't find any other meaning except 'to beseech/beg'). I suppose it depends on the wording we use in our searches! Anyway, thanks again....

do you have Chambers Dict? - it gives the def. for entreat as required in the clue
