My son is 16 and has his first scooter, this was bought earlier this year but he was not 16 until the end of May, so has only just started using it. He has passed his cbt. As it was a new bike the dealer we bought it from had to register and tax the vehicle. He has 3rd party fire and theft insurance on the bike.
The insurance certificated came into place from 27/5/08, and cbt was passed on 1/6/08. However when insurance documents came through to us on 29/5/08 I had to send them to the dealer for them to tax vehicle etc. I called them and they advised me that this would only take a day and that hopefully tax would be with us by 2/6/08.
I assumed that as he was insured and tax had been applied for he would be able to ride his bike.
the worst has happened, yesterday he went out on his bike and hit a car, I have seen the car and there is a tiny scratch to the rear bumper (his bike is worse) he gave the man his name and telephone number, and I called the chap and asked if there was anyway we could sort this out without going through my sons insurance as it would effect his no claims and it cost so much already to insure, he said no as it was a hire car through his work.
Today I called the bike dealer as the tax didnt come in the post and was told it was being taxed today.
I am now extremely worried, does this mean that my son wasnt insured as they didnt apply for the tax till today???
What will hapen now. Would it be possible for me to speak to the mans insurance company and see if we can pay ourselves for the damage so my sons insurance company dont have to get involved?
Any help would be appreciated as this was an error on my behalf
Thanks

He should be OK as far as the law is concerned, but - he went out for the first time and hit a car?! Please get him some extra training. These kids on scooters who think they're on holiday somewhere, cutting up the traffic as they try and get the most they can out of their scooters are a real menace, and danger. To themselves, and others. Get him off the road for now.
