Hiya, I'm decorating my bedroom soon but really need some tips!

I really like all the brown soft furnishings that are coming into fashion now (faux furs etc.) and I want to paint my room in like a chocolate brown colour. But I read that to compliment your decoration, you should "go with the mood of the room". For example if you have a dark room, you shouldn't paint it in a light colour to brighten it up; it will look better if you just paint it in a darker shade of your chosen colour, and use good lighting instead.

So now to the point. I have quite a small room but loads of light comes in through the window, so in the daytime it's really bright.

I don't want to paint my room in a lighter shade of brown because I don't imagine it will give the effect that I want, (and also my Mom just painted her living room in light brown and I don't like it. Sorry Mom).

Should I paint it dark brown or change my colour scheme?!

Any proffesional advive appriciated, but also personal opinions.

Thanks. Cinderella xxx

The paint will be the cheapest part of the makeover so if you don't like how it works out you can re-do it easily - provided it isn't very dark in tint. Best way to decide would be to get a several small tester tins of paint in various tints and shades and paint portions of the wall in your room, then take a week or so to see which one grows on you. Write the name of each paint next to the painted sample so you don't get them mixed up.

If you select a dark tint just remember when you want to change it you will have to blank it out with a white emulsion, or it will show through the next colour.

Light green walls should compliment brown as they are both "earthy" colours (you see green and brown on trees). I once had my walls painted in a brown colour called tobacco... looking back it looks awfull.

it might surprise you.  we painted our bedroom burgundy kind of colour and it actually looked bigger afterwards!

To go with your brown room you might like this bedding - http://www.kiptime.co.uk/

i have my eye on the chocolate corduroy bedding (i'm planning on redecorating first!).

Sorry forgot to say why not just paint one or 2 walls brown and the others maybe a latte kind of colour.  Then it won't all be dark.

sorry me again!  You reminded me i was thinking of doing my room and found this bit on the dulux site.  These colours might work nicely.

I agree with earlier poster even small rooms can sometimes look fine with dark colours. And I also agree about the dark burgundy colour, the shade that is hard to tell if its brown or burgundy looks excellent. But like earlier poster said why not have one or two walls in a different colour?

Thanks tracyh that Dulux site was really helpful. Fun to design a virtual room too! I've ordered some paint swatches from them now so hopefully that'll give me an idea of how the colours will work together.

I've chose a chestnut colour and also a light pink, I think it'll work well in my room, and it'll add a feminine touch to it.

Thanks.
