OK. 15 years ago, we were given a slow cooker as a wedding gift, and I am ashamed to say I have never used it! It is still in the box, in immaculate condition, but having read some recent posts and seen how enthusiastic a lot of you are regarding the benefits of slow cooking, I am finally ready to open the box! Trouble is I haven't the first clue where to start! I am generally a good cook, we are a family of 7 and I cook every day. We have a varied diet so reall anything goes. Any recipe suggestions would be really appreciated but the easier the better to start of. Thanks in advance!

eth....I really do care....and agree with your thoughts about food and wine. Hope your meal turns-out o.k.

Incidentally, my crockpot is rated at 303watts, which means that,on the high setting, it will consume fractionally less than two and a half units of electricity in an 8hr period; whereas my conventional oven is a standard 3killowatt item which (if it were not themostatically controlled) would use-up 3units of electricity per hr........I feel sure that the slow cooker is the all-round winner.

Good luck Ethandron, hope you have the success I had. BTY the name is not a clue to where I live - we are here in damp and foggy Northern Ireland, its a reference to my family's (I'm the only female in a house with 5 males) devotion to Liverpool FC.!
i knew there must have been a connection to lfc - takes one to know one!! my husband has 3 season tickets for anfield in his name (long story, not actually all his) although for a number of reasons he's not been this season. my user name on some other forums makes reference to the connection.
as to the crockpot, well, have just resorted to some cod in breadcrumbs, very fat chips and mushy peas for tea as the contents of the blooming crockpot are all but raw! i wonder if i have a 'dud' and it just doesn't work properly. have had it on high since 2.15pm and it says in the recipe it should take 3-4 hours. i'm going to leave it until we go to bed and see what it'slike then. think we'll be having it for tea tomorrow evening, aat least it will save me cooking tomorrow!

oooh ron, you old crackpot (or should that be crockpot?). at least you can copy and paste, the most technical thing i do with a computer is switch it on. and sometimes off, but that's more difficult.
in between the steps that you mention, you should of course imbibe a glass or two of something smooth and mellow. at least you would then have an excuse for posting the same thing twice. or maybe you did, and that's why.

As a point of interest to you, I learnt to copy and paste from an ABer. The lady's name is Ethel and she is a regular contibutor to AB sections. She also taught me how to put clickable links into documents .....If by chance Ethel you read this.....thanks again for having helped me to improve my computer knowledge.

Don't want to tell you what you already know, but if you have some tough meat then soak that in wine overnight, and then slow cook it the next day. If you do this then you will be able to eat any meat no matter how tough it was to begin with. We have done this many times, and it is lovely. I should say we mostly have stews.
