red deisil instead of heating oil??

recently my neighbour clued me in that she has been using red deisil in her oil tank instead of regular heating oil. she said that the oil guy said that its ok just dont use it all the time. Does this sound right to anyone? Its just oil runs about �300.00 for 500 liters and if it is safe we may be able to have heat again!
