Cheque mate.!

Yet again I've been beaten by a computer. Not at chess this time, but the simple task of requesting a new cheque book from my bank.
Three weeks ago, I telephoned the 'stable' concerned and was informed that the personally printed pieces of poundage presentable papers would arrive within the next four or five days; and they did. However, last week I received a further two books of cheques.
A telephone call to the 'horse traders' was met with an apology for a computer error and I was satisfied that matters had been concluded satisfactorilly. Unfortunately, today, I have received another cheque book.
I have refrained from identifying the Bank concerned, for fear of being recognised and then computer listed to be 'horse drawn and quartered'. However, I would be interested to know if other A.B'ers have a similar 'nagging' story to tell..........Ron.

Can I assume, from your equine references, that a black horse is involved here? ;-)
My own story of a financial institution making a 'slight' error might interest you. Back in the mid-1990s, I was unemployed and I'd persuaded a well-known building society to accept a nominal payment of �10 per month until I found a job. Unfortunately (personally) but fortunately (financially) my father passed away and left me quite a bit of money. I got a quote from the building society for the amount necessary, on a given date, to pay off the mortgage in full. I obtained a draft from my bank for the required amount and presented it on the due date. I rejected the building society's offer to store my deeds and asked that they be posted to me. After a couple of months I got a letter from the building society. I fully expected it to relate to the return of the deeds. Instead I found that it was a notice of repossession because I'd failed to keep up with the �10 monthly payments! (Yes, they'd managed to 'lose' a payment of over �35,000!!!). I had great fun sorting that out ;-)
BTW: No horses were involved. Just think about ferry services across the Thames to identify the building society ;-)

Chris........Your story is far more interesting than mine and, although I am still struggling to solve your cryptic clue. you have unlocked the stable door and let the horse bolt.!!
In A Pickle....Up until recently, my Bank did similar to your's and automatically sent out new cheque books. However, I've had it straight from the horse's mouth that the practice has been altered as an endeavour to get more people using Debit cards before cheques are finally withdrawn from use............Best wishes folk......Ron.
