making a hand water pump

how can you go about making a pumping system from say a bike pump. what sort of valves do i need?

A standard bike pump will work as a water pump as it is, you just need to keep the handle end of the main tube under water as this is where they suck the air in.

As air is easer to pump than water you will also need some sort of a valve on the egress (Where the water squirts out ), end of the device.

BTW. I have a vision of you neck deep in water, frenziedly manipulating
your bicycle pump and trying to keep the water below your nostrils.
