I have just split from my partner and started my maternity leave last week. I have a 6yr old son from another relationship. i am worried as a home owner that i will not be able to cope on 400 SMP per month to pay my mortgage and bills. Please could you tell me whether i would be entitled to any other benefits or should i be looking to put my house on the market ?

contact your local Citizens Advice Bureau .they are the best people to contact,They will be able to help you.
try looking online at tax credits and working tax credits. Consider a childminder and returning to work early too.

oh and of course, your partner ought to be paying child support for his child too
I think Housing Benefit pays peoples interest on their mortgages... Although I'm not sure if you have to have applied for Job seekers allowance to get this.. But your housing benefit dept will tell you..
if it does pay your interest then i think it doesnt even start to kick in for 6 months
As others have said, contact your local CAB - the lady who we bought our house from had four children and didn't work, and the mortgage was somehow paid each month. Her ex wasn't around and as a plasterer wouldn't earn enough to provide for 4 children plus pay a full mortgage each month and rent his own place so I can only assume she got some govt help.
there is a website www.entitledto.co.uk which works out all the benefits you are entitled to
