Issues starting up after failed defrag

About three weeks ago I went to defragment my hard drive, but it froze half way through and I had to turn off my laptop and restart it, but now it won't load up properly. I turn it on and it loads up normally (although slowly), but the vast majority of times it gets to my normal desktop and then freezes as the rest of the programmes in the start-up load. When it gets to that point I can move my mouse around, but not do anything or click anything. I then have to turn off my laptop and try again. It eventually loads completely for use, but I often have to restart it 10+ times before it gets to that point.

Any ideas? I was going to try a system restore, but none of the available dates are before I did the defrag. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Try deleting all temp files from your hard drive by running
disk cleanup. Then try defrag in Safe Mode.
It appear to me that you have far too many programs running in the background and at startup. What RAM have you on your system?
my worry would be if a defrag fails mid way through there is a good chance it is due to a problem on the hard drive, run check disk and do a full surface scan on the drive
I'm with markysngc - sounds like your hard drive's had it. In any case I can't see a system restore having any effect on a defrag - it's not something that can be undone.
