As my VCR was on it's last legs, I bought a Sony HDD box in November. It was fine working in the lounge through a Freeview TV, but having bought a new Sony Bravia TV for the bedroom, I have put taken the HDD box up there. All I'm getting now are messages that there is no digital signal. Have I now got an expensive but redundant HDD box, or can I do something to actually get the signal upstairs? Would this mean buying yet another new arial? I would be very grateful for any suggestions.

Is your Sony Bravia connected to the aerial?

If not you can buy an aerial splitter which allows more than one aerial cable from one aerial. There is no need to get on the roof - you connect it at a convenient point in the cable.

Thank you very much for that Ethel. We had SKY installed last week s we wanted the offer on the SKY+ box, hence the reason the HDD box went upstairs. The SKY engineer did say that the digital reception in Lincolnshire where we are is pants. Would your suggestion still work?
It depends very much on the reception and the quality of your aerial. The splitter and cable should cost less that 10, so it's worth a go.

Gosh that was quick...thank you so much. Will now take myself off to PC World or Curry's. Thank goodness you're technical. Your help is very much appreciated. Cheers!
Silly me - if you are no longer using your aerial you can simply divert it to the bedroom.

Oh dear. Back to square one I'm afraid. I've just told my husband what I was going to do, but he had actually fitted an aerial splitter in the loft some time ago, so that the reception to the bedroom would be improved. Should we go down the new aerial route would you advise? Sorry to be a pain.
Before spending any money, talk to your local neighbours - can they can freeview down the aerial?

Can you get a good analogue signal from the aerial on to your bedroom tv? If not, then the aerial is not performing properly.

But if your Bravia is set to receive Hdmi, change it - it simply won't work properly.

I think it is worth perservering with the aerial - Sky is prone to fail now and again and it is always useful to have terrestrial tv as a backup. When they switch the analogue off in your area you will need to be able to receive freeview from time to time.

So, several things:
Check the Bravia settings aren't set to Hdmi
Check you can receive an analogue signal on the Bravia
Ask the neighbours about freeview for them
Consider a new aerial.
I'm not sure I follow the logic of any of this ...

box downstairs - works ok
box upstairs - no workee when connected to new telly...
qed ... (no that's not on any more!) either telly faulty, box is faulty or Aeriel is faulty.
(is box>telly connected by scart?)
aerial connection to box in>>>box out>telly

it can't be signal reception strength - as it was OK downstairs??? ... if I understand there is still only one telly connected to the aerial ... so nothing has changed except the location of the receiver.

is digital TV reception OK downstairs?
if yes .... it's the lead to the bedroom
does the bravia work downstairs .... if so ....
if reception is poor ... the connections will need to be spot on ... stick hubby in the loft ... don't let him down 'till it's all checked out.

consider an amplifier rather than a splitter (or is that what you mean by splitter??)
(this sort of thing
