A semi-colon is used to separate list items.
It can also be used to indicate a pause which is longer than a comma but shorter than a full stop.
This is in addition to the two answers already given. A semi-colon can be used to join two sentences into one sentence. Correspondingly; a colon can be used to join a partial sentence to another sentence to form one sentence. For example. "Today is Tuesday; tomorrow is Wednesday." and "Today is Tuesday: until midnight." (OK the examples might not be the best in the world but hopefully they illustrate the point!)
