Dog Poo

A friend of mine has rented out a property and against his better judgement has allowed the tenants to get a dog. He went round last sunday and the garden was covered in dog poo (he counted 40 deposits).

He spoke to the tenants about it and they said that
1. It would fertilize the grass, and
2. They couldnt pick it up as the weather was too bad.

Now, personally I think they are taking the p*ss. Firstly, this is dog poo, not horse manure and I fail to see how it would help the grass, in my mind it would destroy it and secondly, I would think that if the poo was picked up as and when it was done then the weather would not be an issue, also for 40 poos to be there, the weather must have been atrocious for a number of weeks!

What is your take on this, I have never had a dog but feel that their excuses are exactly that, excuses! What should they be doing? what are the ramifications of this, both health and 'environmental'.

Many thanks

The tenants are behaving like this because it's not their property and they don't give a damn.

Dog faeces cannot be used as manure and as they sound like irresponsible dog owners, (a responsible one would clean up after the dog). Not only is the dog walking in the mess when it's going out, it's probably bringing it back into the house and all over the furniture.

My partner's mother has 3 dogs and he goes there everyday, scoops the dog mess up and puts it into a bucket of Jeyes disinfectant solution, which breaks it down after a couple of days, it then gets poured down the drain. He also hoses the patio area down everyday, otherwise it would stink and be unhealthy for both the dog and it's owners.

As they sound irresponsible, they possibly aren't worming the dog, so the dog faeces could contain Toxicara, which can cause blindness to children who come into contact with it. I would kick these tenants into touch, they are disrespecting his property and taking him for a fool.
I think the Health authorities can prosecute if really bad and even a vist/inspection from them might[ I said might] jolt these peolpe into getting their act together.
I clear up after my 2 dogs +1 cat daily, prefer the colder weather as the poo is frozen and easier to collect , and I clean up x 2 daily in hot weather and hose down the path with jeyes fluid. If you have an animal you should be prepared to look after it properly or dont have one.

thank you velvetee. The more I think about it the angrier I get and to be honest it isnt really anything to do with me but I just cant understand why someone would go to the trouble of getting a rescue dog then not looking after it or its environment properly.

Also thank you for mentioning the toxicara as I have a new baby and as I know these people am glad I am now aware of the possible dangers
