You can watch Skeeter Davis singing it on Youtube. I'd do a link if i knew how! It wasn't her who had the hit with it in this country though, still can't find out who it was, sadly.
P.S.- song title is "The end of the world"
Here is Skeeter Davis with her country/pop crossover hit...

Although it has been covered many times (including The Carpenters, Loretta Lynn, Herman's Hermits, Bobby Vinton, John Cougar Mellencamp, Johnny Mathis, Julie London, Eddy Arnold, Dottie West, Nancy Sinatra, Sonia Evans, Twiggy, Claudine Longet, Agnetha Fltskog, Rosie Flores, Patti Page, Anne Murray, Nina Gordon, Vonda Shepard, Expos, The Vanguards, Leigh Nash) it has never been a UK Top 40 hit.
Reached No. 18 in March '63
Pressed the key too early!

Skeeter Davis version reached No. 18 in the UK in '63
^^^ Sorry - meant excluding Skeeter

However further research proves my statement as fallacy...

well-known Scouse songstress(!) Sonia also reached no. 18 in 1990 with her cover.
And to add further insult to injury, here she is...

Herman's Hermits recorded a version in the 1960s.
Just for the sake of completeness, the song was actually written by Sylvia Dee.
Twinkle had a hit with this in 1965. The B side was Take Me To The Dance, on the Decca lable.
