One way I was taught, is using a calculator
divide the sum by 5.71, the reverse of 17.5 and then add it on!!

But I don't how to find out what it was originally unless you do this and subtract.
ok we know 235 is the result of some number, say N x 1.175 so, using school equation rearrangement techniques:

N x 1.175 = 235 - take x 1.175 over the other side where it becomes divide - so

N = 235/1.175 = 200

Tada!
one way i found easiest to understand is:

if you divide 235 by 117.5 y(100% plus the added17.5%) you get what 1% would be,
then you just need to times this by 100 to get what 100% would be.
i.e (235/117.5)x100
I hope that FunnyGirl wasn't a pupil in one of my maths classes!

As others have said, to add 17.5% on (in a single calculation) you multiply by 1.175.

Therefore, to 'undo' that calculation, you simply divide by 1.175.

Thats great - thanks guys - think i can do that now
Divide the total sum by 117.5 and then multiply by 100

235 divide by 117.5 = 2
2 mult. by 100 _200
Sorry wardie 100 !!!!
If percentages and decimals are not your thing, multiply by 40 and divide by 47.
235 x 40 = 9400
9400 / 47 =200.
