Hi all, at present my p.c. has 512 mb of memory, DDR PC2700 184 pin. i've tried to add two 1gb of memory and it wouldn't start up so i removed the original 512 mb and it still would not start. When i removed the two 1gb and put 512mb back in all was ok again. my motherboard is an ASUS P4S800 and my new memory is 1gb 3200 184 pin 400 mhz ddr dimm. any ideas? I hope this makes sense.
TIA Russ

chances are your motherboard cannot handle faster memory (the 1gb 3200)

Go to the Asus site and it will tell you what speed your motherboard can handle and in what configuration

http://www.asus.com/
This Crucial web site will look at your computer memory and tell you what you have got and what memory you can add to it.

Yeah ive tried both those sites and they say it will take up to 3 X 1gb 400mhz. Thanks for your time.
Hi, ...have tried just one of the 1gb cards? If that fails I can only think it is related to the memory cards. .....as you say the motherboard should support the 400Mhz cards
Hi, me again ....just another thought are you 100% that the cards were fully located and that both latches at the end of the card wre properly located ....sometimes with a new card the location can be harder ...you think it's in ..but it isn't
unless the latches are fully located in the slots the card will not work. Try one of the cards ...double check that the latches are really secure ...then see if that works.
If you`ve got 3 dimm slots on your m/b, try the 1gb sticks in slots 2 & 3, leaving no. 1 empty. That should put the pair on the same "channel". Worth a shot, oh & enter the bios at startup (press del, F1, F2 oe Esc, it should tell you which on the 1st screen) check that the memory fsb speed is set to auto or synch.
