Hi
I have to go to my friends fathers funeral today and when I asked for the time off my manager said that I would have to use the time of in lieu system.

My question is, is that I thought to go to funerals i would not have to use holidays or time of in lieu?

I did not say anything to my manager about this, so I am now sure how to approach this if she's wrong?

There is no law that says any company has to give time off for their staff to attend a funeral. Most companies will have regulations about time off for compassionate leave and this usually applies only to close family members. Makes sense if you think about it.

I am afraid it will be up to your employer.

Officially you wouldnt be allowed compassionate leave for a friend. Normally if you had an understanding manager, he would allow you time off... whether it be toil or good management. If not go for the toil option and take a weeks sick later!
Using TOIL or unpaid leave when it's not a close family member is probably the fairest way of dealing with it.
