it is due to the temp. in the garage it should start to work as the temp increases in the next few days depending where you live
Silly as it sounds, you could warm up the area round the freezer slightly, using a very small heater. A couple of candles would do the trick - but make sure they're safe!
My step dad uses a paraffin lamp to keep the frost off the garage, don't know the science why it's like that though.
had a similar problem a few years ago and read freezer manual and it said that you should turn the thermostat down and i knew this didnt make sense but when i did turn it down freezer was fine, apparently when its cold in your garage the freezer cant determine the right temperature outside and wont automatically switch to freeze mode so if its turned down it reduces the temperature the freezer needs to work, hope this makes sense but give it a try at least.
a.holian, that is interesting.

Does turning it down mean make it even colder, or not so cold?
As an interesting aside, your smoke alarms also go haywire in realy cold weather - In a previous house where I had no central heating and no double glazing, it got really cold in the hall way and our smoke alarm got very confused and kept going off in the middle of the night. We had to stick a fan heater on to keep the hall above freezing during the night!
a thermostat in a freezer clicks on when needed but when its in a colder enviroment like the garage it wont click onto refreeze as the garage temperature is already making it cold so reducing the thermostat reduces the temperature the freezer also needs so that it is colder than the garage, if that makes sense.
