To keep drafts out
some old fashion ones were used as doorknockers as well,i think they were made of cast iron?
Some do.  There are loads of different types of letterboxes.  Some have two flaps; some have one flap; some flap inwards; some outwards; some have springs to shut them tightly; some have brushes in the middle to exclude the draught; some have sharp edges; some have little yappy dogs behind them waiting to bite fingers; some are vertical; some a horizontal; some are at mid-height; some are at ground level; some have extra knockers on them, and various combinations of the above.  WVNBIVDB

Thanks Bernando but I did know that!

I asked to settle an argument between me and my other half. He says that letterboxes are there to be used as knockers but I say its normal to rap at the door with your knuckles in the absence of a knocker or a bell.

Oh!  In that case, no it isn't.  If there isn't a doorbell, just knock.  Some people use the letterbox-flap as a door-knocker, but they do so incorrectlyWVNBIVDB

P.S. What does "aconymous" mean?
