I am self employed roofing contractor and am interested in employing a 18 year old lad to train up as a roofer. Neither of us want to go down the apprentice route and thought that it would be best to pay a hourly rate going forward. The problem for me is that although I know there is a minimum pay etc I don't know how to go about working out how to capture what to pay. ie do I pay from door to door ( I collect him and we go to the job ) or do I pay one way only? If we agree on a 40 hr week what happens when we are rained off and finish early? usually I go out when the weather improves and finish the job then which may be a Sat or Sun. If you have similar experiences can you help with way forward for me. Thanks in advance.

I used to work like this with a friends dad but as a landscaper. He would pay me dayly and if we got rained off, unless we worked past lunchtime, he didn't ask the people we were working for for that days money. So therefore I didn't get paid that day. At first I was a little miffed, but then after a while I understood that if you don't do the work you shouldn't really ask for the money. We just carried on the work the next day. Hope this helps.
Ive got a mate who's a roofer and if he needs help he pays a flat daily rate of say 40 quid cash in hand lol
thats double what i got haha!
