Is there any way to get around the problem of having a poor credit history if you want to rent from an estate agent or do they all just rufuse you?

why do you have to go via an estate agent, there are hundreds of private letting agencies out there.
majority of them usually ask for a deposit and month in advance
It wont't matter whether you go to an agent or direct to the landlord, both should do a credit check - if they don't theyre asking for trouble and are very naive.

If your credit history isnt too good be upfront about it with the agent or landlord. They wont necessarily refuse you but may ask that you provide a guarantor (someone who would pass the credit check and would be willing to pay your debts if you defaulted on the agreement). Alternatively, you could offer to pay 6 months rent upfront - assuming you have the money.
frankly I'd think twice before renting to somebody that has trouble paying we don't rent for nothing ya know.
When I was 18 with no credit history, despite having a reference from bank and employer I was asked for three months up front as well as the deposit. Have you tried a housing association to rent from?
