i can't help myself (i feel this is wrong) but the best i can come up with so far is a 'jack snipe ? i can go for the snipe bit but nothing else ?
Question Author
That's interesting phizzy as I had thought of that one because of playing jacks on the lawn but couldn't place the snipe bit.
Where do you thinks it fits then?

Thanks too to you novalis. I'm not altogether certain about this but some of the clues have been a bit iffy so you could well be right.
Snipe as in sniper? You would take cover from a sniper.
got called away (as you do) yes squarebear that is my thinking on the 'snipe. bit - it was the jack bit i couldn't find so i reckon jack snipe is a.o.k. ?? good on ya!
