How do you decipher sarcasm from compliments?

Recently met a guy that is sarcastic and unsympathetic towards my problems.... is he being a complete a***ho le or should I give him a fair chance, as I would someone that was considerate and understanding?

Where do us girls draw the line?

He put a lot of thought and consideration into preparing birthday surprises for me, yet shows no compassion for my ongoing problems......

He is an enigma.....

Anyone got any advice??

Some people are unable to communicate easily. Or maybe this person does not realise how it effects others. I have an uncle who is extreamly tackless and put peoples backs up, and mine sometimes, i know he cares for me, he just does not think. I do tell him now. And seems to of got better. I did stop sharing information with him. that helps too.
You could try to point out that his reaction is effecting you. he may not realise etc.

It is all about respect, i am possibly the most sarcastic person i know, but only with my friends and occasionally strangers that i judge will see the funny side of it all. Not someone who feels offended by it.
It is my way of assuring myself that these are my friends and that i am safe to be me. If i had anything nasty to say i would keep it to myself.
As someone has said it is likely that he has difficulty talking about feelings and sees it as a weakness. Put it to him if you are that keen and see if he is worth it, or just walk away!
