Following on from my bottom thread, I rang childrens A&E and they said it sounds like my little man has asthma, I am really concerned about this. Can anyone give me advice or has anyone else got a baby who has /had asthma so young. I believe its very hard to diagnose??

Thanks

Hello Teasy , first of all don't panic , asthma in children can be well controlled with regular and appropriate treatment .
Your doctor will go through all that you need to know and will access how your child is. My son was on treatment at the age of 2 , having nebulizer and other drugs but then he has muchly grown out of it now as a young adult.
There are a friendly array of childrens puffers and peak flow meters available and your child should be able to live a normal daily active routine . :-) x
if they do diagnose asthma, which they dont like doing with a baby so young, ask if they can check for allergies and food intolerances.

Dairy can be a big trigger in asthma and it may mean that a dairy free diet can help, but ask before changing your childs diet like that.

Thank you so much folks. I am quite upset and emotional about it, but then I havent had much sleep in the past 10 weeks.

The mere mention of Asthma frightens the life out of me, as a friends daughter nearly lost her life having an asthma attack (she didnt know she had asthma) And my little baby seems so small.

He already had trouble breathing, 10 weeks ago, when it all started, his airways where closing over, and I didn't really see the signs then, I just thought he was wheezing because of teething, and it was by pure chance I had him at the docs.
Do you have pets in the house, Teasy?
I had asthma as a baby, and it lasted until, in my teens, I moved into a pet-free household. Then, almost at once, no more wheezing or gasping for breath.
Of course, there can be many other triggers.
Good luck.

No pets (that I know of ha, ha) and the house is as dust free as possible. But I was speaking to my hubby on the phone there, and he mentioned the tumble dryer???
not sure about tumble drier, perhaps move it out of way if you can.

my asthma is agravated by dairy, pet hairs, dust, damp air, very dry air (ie if central heating is on a lot).

i can undestand why you are scared but if managed well asthma hardly effects a child life. Full blown attacks arent common and usually treatment can be given at first sign of wheezing and it goes away.

Be careful if you give your child any form of ibruprofen (i cant recall if under 1s can have it) as it can cause a reaction in some asthma sufferers.
Hi Teasy does your little one have cuddly toys in his pram and cot. If he does remove them for a while to see if this is maybe the trigger. If he has one he goes to sleep with put it in a plastic bag in the freezer every day .This will hopefully kill of any mite which may be in the toy.Now im not saying it is crawling with bugs, its just a precaution Good luck and please let us know how you get on x
Do you use talcum powder?

This can be very irritating to the lungs and I wouldn't touch the stuff.

we were told that my son was borderline for asthma when he was a toddler, after a bout of croup, but he is now 6 and a atrapping healthy lad with no signs of asthma, but he does tend to get a bad chest if he gets a cold.
Hi Teasy, firstly, do not worry, you are doing the best you can by getting him seen asap and getting whatever it is diagnosed. Do not keep thought of the girl you know coming close to death as, like you said, no one knew she even had asthma.
My daughter was diagnosed with asthma when she was 3 years old after having a cough that wouldnt go. She had no other symptoms of a cold, no temperature, runny nose, aches and pains, just a cough. First they just kept giving anti biotics which helped, but the cough always came back when the course was finished. They then gave her ventolin medicine which really did do the trick. They went on to give her two inhalers and a chamber for her to take them through and she got better. I was told one of the inhalers, she was only to take when she seemed to need it ie. when she was weezing......... she never needed it. Then there were times when she would fall aslepp before I had had chance to give her her evening dose of the other inhaler...... it never affected her. I took her back and they decided she had never had asthma in the first place! Immediately I stopped with the inhalers and she has never been in need of anything like that since, she is now 6 years old.
Like many have mentioned, allergies are a major factor with asthma, and it turns out my daughter simply was having an allergic reaction to something. What, we never actually found out. The only thing she does need on occasions is something like piriteze medicine in the the summer as she does get hayfever, which incidently, causes the same symptoms as she had when she was three!
So try not too worry too much. he may not even have asthma but even if he has, it will easily be treated and controlled which will become apart of you and your sons everyday routine. You really have nothing to be afraid of.

Good luck this afternoon at the hospital :)
Hi my son got bronchitis at 3 weeks old which he wouldnt shake with antibiotics. He kept getting chest infections which he could never shift. then at about 6 months the gp said it was astmha and prescribed salbutamol in a syrup. ( which i thought was rubbish). Now my son is six and has blue and brown inhalers, luckily he only has an attack when he is poorly ( cough, colds etc) it goes straight to his chest and he nearly always ends up in hosp for a few days. But he seems to be growing out of it and it is not triggerd by any thing other than being poorly!

xx
Hi,

I used a Chiropractor, they can not cure Asthma but relieve the symptoms and make breathing so much easier. Was it a complicated birth as it can be a contributing factor when the nerves are involved as from the spine the nerves go to all the organs in the body. A little boy treated with bed wetting never had the problem again after the nerves were released. Worth a try I think.
Good Luck!
