can you get files that are protected on wmp to be unprotected so i can play them on my portable mp3 player? thanks

Chances are minimal. I assume you mean Windows Media Player and that you are playing protected WMA files or similar. Microsoft is heading up something called DRM (Digital Rights Management) which i supposed to stop people copying music and video.
Yeah you can. The MediaTwins software Advanced Encoding Tools version d would convert protected WMAs to MP3s. No idea how they did it but when I upgraded to the later version e the functionality had been removed. Try getting your hands on the last version and try your luck.
burn them to a cd as audio tracks, then rip them back onto you pc as mp3s
do what dafyd said, its the easiest way. Even better, if u can, burn your songs to a CD-RW so you can copy them back on as unportected MP3's and then re-use the cd. If you r going to do that, make sure your cd burner supports CD-RW's.
