i have a mk3 p reg golf i am thinking of getting a roof rack //roof bars how do they fit on ?? there is 2 arrows on a plastic trim does this have to be removed?

The plastic trim should slide in the direction of the arrows to allow you to fit the bars. If you get roof bars specifically designed for your make of car, they will come with instructions on how to fit them.
