I have a Toyota Rav 4 ( 2002 model ) that has had the engine management light come on intermittently. It was diagnosed by Toyota dealer as the Catalytic convertor. I requested they reset the sensors as this was an import from Holland with different measurement criteria.

This solved the problem but ih has now re-occured and over the pars month been permanety on. Replacing a Cat convertor is not cheap at the dealer. Are there any other garages that I can take the car to to get the management system cehccke d plus if its the Cat a cheaper option that the quoted 1000?

My som had the same problem, told it was the Catalictic converter.

He renewed the air filter which was very dirty and never had the problem again.

Worth a try for a few quid.
Hi bournes. The Cat as such is not monitered as such by the on-board-diagnostics on most cars-but if it is faulty, it will show up on an emissions test(MOT)-local garage will do emission test quite cheaply. You need to get a read out of the faults stored in the onboard ECU- computer brain that controls your car- this will give you a fault code indicating whats wrong. Any local garage that has an OBD1 or 2 diagnostic gizmo can do this for you possibly-give them a ring with your car details- if not( your reg is early on in OBD terms) you are back with the Toyota(expensive) dealer!! . good luck.
Sorry bournes- misread your reg year- your car is well into OBD 2 time- and cars of 2002 can have sensors before and after the Cat, to check on some of its functions- you still need the fault code readout to know if its a sensor or the cat at fault- the diagnostic OBD tool will give a live readout of the sensors operating to check them. Good news is as your car is probably fully OBD2 compliant, your chance of a local garage being able to read out your ECU codes is much higher!!
