I agree entirely.
Probably you, your mate Steve and Mr.PooHead( what a juvenile name that is!)
Its not that The Beatles were rubbish, they patently weren't. They wrote some lovely tunes and made more good records than most bands could ever hope to but, and its a big but, they are hysterically over-rated. Can it really be true that nothing better been recorded since they split up in 1970? Come on! Sgt Peppers regularly tops the 'best album ever made' charts and its not even the best Beatles album (that'd be The White Album or Revolver or Rubber Soul or Abbey Road). What gets my goat is the constant banging on about how fab the four of them were. Remember, for every Norwegian Wood there's an Octopus' Garden and for every Please Please Me there's a Obla-Di-Bla-da. The Beatles are one of the most important bands ever to have existed but its more than 40 years since their first release and nearly 30 years since their last (if you don't count the grave-robbing, money-grabbing desecration that was released around the time of that Archive nonsense) and there has to be have been something as good, if not better, released almost anywhere in the world since. All that said, if you want to see just how good Lennon and McCartney really were as songwriters, pick up a copy of Glass Onion. It's a fantastic CD of Beatles covers recorded by other people. These versions prove beyond any doubt that those boys could turn a tune. My opinion is that its time to turn down the volume of the adoration and get on with shouting about something/someone else. Final point, if you can't abide the Beatles, at least recognise if nothing else, without them there wouldn't have been The Rutles and how sad would that be, huh?
I always think the Beatles were greater than the sum of their parts. They were great songwriters (although most wasn't my cup of tea I was always a Rolling Stones kind os girl) but none of them were very talented musicians or vocalists. You have to admit there have been some far greater versions of their material Shirley Bassey and 'Something' and Joe Cockers 'Little Help From My Friends' are two that spring to mind
How much of their music have you heard, cdn52? They were forever experimenting with different styles of recording and performing, and laid the foundations for record production ( with George Martin ) that was to be used for the next thirty years. To say they were rubbish is utter nonsense.
One of the great things about music in general - and on the AB in particular - is its total subjectivity. If you and your friend feel that The Beatlea are tuneless rubbish - then for you that's a fact. Millions would disagree, but to put your observation in some sort of context, The Beatles are not so much about 'what', as about 'when'. They arrived at a point in cultural history when their impact was simply so massive, it's like had never been seen before, nor will it again. Because their music is the backdrop to incredible social upheaval, they are the soundtrack to the lives of a generation, who will always overlook their shortcomings because of association and nostalgia for a time of youth and freedom. You can argue that you don't like the music they make, but you can't really put forward a convincing premise that what they did was sub-standard. OK, time to get subjective - I personally think The Beatles were the musical equivalent of heaven on earth - but hey, it really is just subjective.
I agree with this. I think The Who are the best band of all time but Rod Stewart tops my all time list of greatest acts.
All I can say cdn52 is you couldn't have seen any of their live early performances -( notice I didn't say hear! ) - they were exciting, fresh, new - and came along just at the right time - because of them we were the envy of the world.

Later on their stuff was a little weird, so I moved over to the Blues - and have remained faithful ever since - but please don't knock the group that probably did more for British music, and in fact the whole way of life ( fashion, hair etc) than any other, before or since.

Unless your Diane Warren or one of the Bee Gees then you really have got much of an opinion as far as song-writing abilities goes....J L wasn't the best singer in the owrld it's true but name me some alternatives rather than just bad mouthing them, though I think you'll struggle....The Rolling Stones are the only contemporaries of theirs who are still going and have become sad parodies of themselves, and perhaps this James Dean/Jimmy Hendrix syndrome of not seeing them ages as a band has led to them being idolised....but I still maintain that as stated there is no band that compare with the cultural and musical impact in our lives that the Beatles had and still continue to have.
Tuneless? methinks you jest.

Over-rated? Compared with what, pray?

If you were around when they appeared you'd know how dreadfully dreary 'popular' music was. Then in 1962 came this guitar band with cheery ditties, 'Love me Do' etc, by 1966 ther was Revolver with a whole range of music unlike any other 'pop group' - Polical comment, taxman, a cheery kids song, 'Yellow Submarine', eastern weirdness 'Tomorrow Never Knows', 67 had masterpieces like 'Penny Lane' and 'Strawberry Fields for Ever'

They influenced every other musician, and showed what was possible. Its not obvious now, looking back through 40 years of music to just how important they were.

My Dad said of them 'There music willl never last, not like the classics'. How I'd like him to be here everytime I'm in a lift thats playing a Beatles tune, or hear a singer take one and re-interpret it.

You may not like them, thats your right, but rubbish they were not.

I happen to think Octocpus' Garden is one of the greatest tunes ever recorded. But I like the Beatles, cant stand the stones I'm afraid, a true case in my opinion of over rated in my opinion.
THEY WERE THE BEGINNINGS OF THE POP IDOL/FAME ACADEMBY PROCESSED MANAGED AND PR BULL!!!!!!! GLAD SOMEONE ELSE SEES THEM FOR THE CRETINS OF MUSIC THEY WERE
Ah Trinity, that's where you're wrong..!

The Beatles come from a long line of bands who served their apprenticeship and grew up the hard way. They actually played their instruments and wrote their own songs, they slogged round the small halls and pubs for years before actually making the big time - same as the Stones, The Who, The Faces and many, many more. Manufactured they weren't''.they got a lucky break maybe, but even so, that still applies today.

They were a mark of their time, as Andy observes ' same as Glenn Miller & Bill Haley before them.

The current climate is full of 'pop-idols' and 'fame academy' types that won't last, but there are still plenty of talented performers that will stay the course - Robbie Williams springs to mind (not a personal choice, but a fine example of staying power, even from a manufactured band).

Music is a highly personal thing and thankfully there is a diversity out there enough to satisfy everyone. Just enjoy what you like, give new stuff a try, keep an open mind'.it really isn't necessary to denigrate artists that are not to your taste ' live and let live guys'!

Sorry for the complicated words, but apparently the simple ones (like sl*g off) are profanities and not allowed'!!) ' ;o)

I've always thought the Beatles to be hugely over-rated, and would live my life quite happily without ever hearing another of their tunes again. I can see that they did have a huge cultural influence, though.

They are still the best band EVER...........If not The Beatles, who would you recommend people listen to......Even now The Beatles are still cited as the biggest influence on peoples' careers and for only 8 years recording their body of work has to be admired.Unlike Elvis Presley who was far too busy filling his fat face with Burgers to commit one solitary idea to paper
i hate the beatles. i also hate people putting up these pathetic arguments about how important they were. what utter nonsense. they sold over a billion records and cracked america but what is there legacy to us? lift music, hold music and a wet sunday in the car with your dad listening to norfolk gold. no thanks. bryan adams sold a lot of records, black eyed peas are selling a lot of records, take that made girls scream, dont mean a thing. and what did they do when they split? stay in bed, sing about frogs and tommas the tank engine. only george left a real legacy with withnail and i. you'll be telling me how great oasis are next, don't make me laugh.
THE BEATLES ARE THE GREATEST BAND THAT EVER OR WILL EVER GRACE THIS PLANET. AND THATS NOT AN OPINION, IT'S A FACT! YOU MAY NOT AGREE, BUT THAT JUST MEANS YOUR WRONG!
AND BY THE WAY, WHAT RUBBISH DO YOU LISTEN TO?
