Muslim wedding ring...?

In an Religious Studies lesson in school, we were learning about Islam and weddings and my R.S teacher said that the ring they wear is allowed to be made of any metal except gold but she doesn't know why and I was wondering if this is true and if so, why?

Hiya, my mate has just become a muslim as she recently married one, she has a gold wedding ring with a massive red stone in the middle of it.
Muslim men are not allowed to wear gold because the Prophet said it was extravagant.
