iTunes Mpeg 4 .m4a files.

If I email my friend an Mpeg4 .m4a track ripped from CD on my PC, will they be able to play it on their Apple (with iTunes installed)? Or will .m4a files only play on the computer they were created on?

.m4a files are fine. MAtter of fact, I've just converted a bunch to another format using free and readily available software. I'm pretty sure the protected ones are .m4p, or somesuch.
