Printer Problems

After installing a new printer (Canon MP460), I am receiving the advice "Printer is not responding". I installed according to the book but I did not disable Firewall and Anti virus. Can this be the cause of the problem and, if so, is it necessary to do a complete uninstall and reinstall?.
