at the risk of unleashing the wrath of other site members, have decided to post my questions anyway. So, 39d thought DECAD meaning group of 10 as this is Ace backwards between DD, but this does not fit with 47a (I have ODDEST, as in DOES+T muddled up around D). So, are my solutions wrong or have I misinterpreted the preamble? Most other entries that have been treated have had a letter knocked off the beginning or end, but this could be coincidental. Please be clear, I am not asking for the answers, merely whether I am correct in my reasoning to obtain them (this last to anyone who gets offended by my posts). 2d and 46a pose a similar problem, as if the answers I have worked out are correct, my rule is wrong. Thanks.

Hi Physicsgirl!

First of all, I don't get offended or annoyed by your posts.
Decad ( which has to be modified ) and oddest are right. Both 2d and 46a also have to be modified in the same way.
The key is 5d. If you were Chemistrygirl it would help.
( Hope that comment points you in the right direction. )

thank you very much, Novalis. As it happens, I'm a bit chemistry girl too, so I'll have a think about it whilst I mark my year11 tests.
novaliz (sic) Thanks! :o)

by the way, my preamble in the question was as a result of a comment made at the end of our thread last week, which still upsets me. It certainly wasn't directed at the usual suspects.
Enjoy your marking! ( Have done 52 appeals but don't expect many more. )
Look for a chemical symbol common to all three of the answers indicated above which need to be modified. 5d is what has happened to each of them when modified. There are two different words possible but, because of the crossword title, when you've decided which word to use take the spelling with "z" rather than "s".
To Crofter!

Thee was debate about s or z in an Herculis posting on Monday to which you'd contributed and added that it arose in EV777. Don't know if you saw the message I left there for you but this puzzle is "Pangram" so "z" otherwise there isn't one in the completed grid.
Physicsgirl - Couldn't help but notice your comment about a comment last week.
I don't ever do EV, but do the Listener every week and was intrigued enough to check back at your previous thread. Surprise surprise - the same person who upset you is one who has posted similar comments recently in Listener threads.
I'd think that one who gets so upset might not risk distressing himself and instead ignore any threads related to the Listener or EV ... it's a bit like the old TV on/off button - if you don't like what you are watching the solution is under your own control.

the penny has just dropped and I really need to reach for the tippex now. It was just luck that had most of my answers falling into place, and I was left with some really strange looking (even for EV) would-be entries. I may find the rest of the grid a bit easier now. Thanks, Novalis.

you'd think there were worse things to get your knickers in a twist about, wouldn't you, cluelessJoe?! Murder, climate change....
Just seen your comment about the tippex! I always make a copy of the grid for EV ( either photocopy or copy it onto paper ) and use pencil. It saves on tippex!!!
Ignore the comments. It really isn't worth letting them upset you. This makes the tenth or eleventh EV you've attempted by my reckoning. It's a steep learning curve. Keep at it. Crofter and Cruciverbalist are first-rate tutors.
Sorry Crofter!
Not with it when reading your previous post! Obviously you did see Monday's comment!!! ( Mea culpa -- or a senior moment! )
Hi Physics girl. Keep going - and ignore the comments. I could understand it if you were asking for all the answers but like me you're improving week by week and I can't see that to ask for hints for two or three is any worse than asking for full answers in any other crossword. I missed last week's moan but will check it out in a minute.
And a further comment for anyone who feels inclined to criticise. I finished this one without having to post any questions on this site, have finished several others unaided and am managing to do most of the questions in the harder ones. There are 2 reasons why I'm saying this 1) I almost certainly wouldn't have got this far without encouragement and support. 2) As for some of us "not being up to it", I wasn't up to driving a car either until I had lessons. If I wasn't making progress I'd concede defeat.
So a big thank you to all my mentors on here for your generosity and patience. That far outweighs the occasional gripe that comes our way.
Hi novalis/novaliz, I was trying to be cryptic!

I have been doing cryptic crosswords for over 40 years and learned about EV only 17 grids ago and became an instant convert. Since then, I have admitted defeat on only 2 grids.

I have benefitted from the occasional "gentle nudge" on AB and other times needed a healthy dose of KITA (an acronym for "Kick In The A**e"). I try to give at least as much as I take and try NOT to spoon feed or be spoonfed.

With Physicsgirl (and others) I get the feeling that there is genuine effort put into EV and great enjoyment obtained therefrom.

As compiler of the Quiz "Birds and the B's", it's a weird feeling seeing my own clues being posted on AB. I fight the temptation to explain, for example, every aspect of the clue "Mavis lied in Berlin and got a fungal infection" (4,6)! As long as the subtleties are appreciated by some, who am I to be critical?

Since it's past posting time, could you answer a few queries?
30d ??TER
29a R?O?
25d ENMEWED, INMEWED (this would mean my 24a was wrong), IMMEWED ... and why?
35a Thought this was ROMANCES (SCORE+MAN) but that didn't fit with 5d.
Thanks
30d couter = counter ( bar ) - n ( new ) entered as outer
29a croup ( coup round "r" = rex ) entered as roup
23d emmewed Cornish ( Padstow tourist is emmet failing to ( i.e. missing t - abbreviation for to ) + wed
35a is romances
5d is decarburized not decarbonized.
Just looked at missing punctuation in my explanation for 23 down. Hope you follow it anyway!!!
Should also have added that Romances is entered as Romanes. ( Can't you tell that it was famous last words yesterday re appeals---- Had 11 today! )
Question Author
aaaargh. Cannot believe I got 5d wrong after all that. Thanks Novalis. Good luck with the appeals!
