In England there is no such thing and no associated rights.
In the US, marriage laws are governed by each state individually, therefore you would have know which state is being discussed...
I think in Scotland there is such a thing if you've lived together X number of years and it gives you the same rights as a traditionally married couple.
In the UK, although it is not actually called assuch - after 2 years of living together the partner is entitled to a share in the will (unless specified not) if the partner was to die. This is foten what people mean when they say "common in law"
