Because it is a small area here in the UK we have just one time zone, and everyone is on the same time.

The US, being so wide, spans a number of time zones (each one hour difference) and they are known as:

ET - Eastern Time (New York)

CT - Central Time (west of New York)

MT - Mountain Time - (Almost on west coast)

PT - Pacific Time (San Francisco)

So when you are in New York (ET) the time in San Fancsisco (PT) is 3 hours earlier.

Brilliant - I'm having a few days off and watching all the Sky channels I don't usually get the chance to! This is the life! I just knew someone could tell me on here! Thanks
One side effect of these time zones across the US is what time to arrange a major event like a sporting match that the whole US may want to watch.

Here in the UK the FA Cup Final is always on at 3pm, and it is the same time for everyone in the UK.

But if you set a sporting event to start at say 3pm ET (New York time) it would be only 12pm midday (PT) in San Francisco.

And of course if a major sporting event is played in the evening in New York at say 8pm, and is shown on "live" on TV, for the people in the west (PT) it is only 5pm.

It is worse if a match is starts at 8 pm on the west (PT) as that is 11pm ET and many people in NY are going to bed.
