I thought the worst accent Oscar was safe with Dick Van Dyke's cockney attempt in 'Mary Poppinns' until I listened to Tony Britton last night in 'Day of the Jackal'. It was a sort of East End meets Birmingham. Does anyone know what it was meant to be? Thanks.

I think it is great if any actor, from anywhere, can do a really decent accent. If they can't do accents at all other than their own, but can act extremely well, then it should not matter if they speak in their 'native' tongue, (as long as the storyline is good too). Then there is Sean Connery, who nevers changes his accent, was the best Bond and is still sexy at 284!!!!!
Sorry Cetti, that wasn't a proper answer to your question!

It's ok coggles, I just hope someone can before we disappear off the page. :-D!!
In which case, you never heard Peter (Harry Grout in 'Porridge') Vaughan attempting a Geordie accent in 'Our Friends in the North'!
I disagree Cetti. His accent was actually spot on. Tony Britton was born in Brum so would have no difficulty doing a proper accent. It just wasn't as broad as many people would expect. The Brum accent and the harsher Black Country accent are often attempted by actors who just end up doing a terrible parody.
