Tearing my hair out; 17 A An officer's pay (5) S?R?W ...is it screw (which is not very nice !!); and 15D Work about to start - or stop (5,4) ?E?V?O?E? ??Leave over?? Not a normal phrase, methinks. Any ideas welcomed with thanks.

Agree with both your answers and your sentiments! Prison officer is a screw which is also slang for pay. Leave over is a northern expression.

Thanks, novalis. Will go for those, although, even being a northerner myself (well, Liverpudlian actually) still think "leave over" sounds a bit odd !
