The island of Mauritius in the Indian Ocean. The island was visited by Dutch settlers in the 1600's, and the native dod bird, flightless and slow was prey to the sailors, and some of the animals, dogs, pigs and so on, which destroyed the dodos' ground nests. That, combined with the destruction of their woodland habbitat, meant that this bird was extinct within eightey years, a phenomenal example of man's destructive capabilities.
